Awesome Ducati 916

I finally have some pictures of a Ducati 916 that I painted last winter. The owner had crashed the bike pretty good and it needed a whole set of bodywork. I recommended that he order a set of carbon fiber panels from QB Carbon in England. They make some very nice parts.

Once the panels arrived, we worked on colors, layout and graphics. He had a good idea of what he wanted from some magazine articles he had seen. I started with the wheels which were magnesium alloy Marchesini rims. They were straight but in pretty bad shape cosmetically. The owner picked out the shade of gold he wanted, and the wheels were sprayed and clear coated with the original Marchesini decals on the lips.

The tank was pretty much a mess- not so much from crash damage, but from several paint jobs. It really should have been dipped and stripped, but I did it the hard way and sanded all the old stuff off. Here it is with the base coat applied.

The raw carbon panels needed lots of prep work to fill in pin holes and get ready for the multiple color coats. The tail was the trickiest since we wanted to leave some of the carbon showing and still have the stock looking scheme for the red with white number plates. Lots of taping and applying colors one layer at a time. Here are a few shots of the different stages-

The side panels and upper also had multiple colors with some carbon left showing in the air ducts, etc. . The belly pan was left all carbon, and just cleared.

Here is the final result- The bike will be at the Road Atlanta AMA Superbike Race this weekend August 31-Sept 2. Look for the Ducati tent, and it should be somewhere around there. Email me if you want any of these pictures in hi-res 2MB files.
